From a Miami beach party to a global electronic music empire
The first Ultra Music Festival was held on March 13, 1999, on the sands of Miami Beach as a one-day event during the Winter Music Conference. Approximately 10,000 people attended what was essentially a large beach party featuring emerging electronic music talent. The event was conceived as a way to bring the energy of European rave culture to the United States.
Ultra relocated from Miami Beach to Bayfront Park in downtown Miami, a move that would define the festival's identity forever. The waterfront location along Biscayne Bay provided a stunning urban backdrop and allowed for significant expansion of the festival grounds and production capabilities.
Ultra expanded to a two-day format and began attracting the biggest names in electronic music as headliners. The festival's production value increased dramatically with massive LED walls, pyrotechnics, and enhanced sound systems. Attendance surged as the EDM explosion was beginning to take hold globally.
Ultra launched its Ultra Worldwide initiative, bringing the festival brand to countries across the globe.
